Standing water causes serious dangers
Standing water causes serious dangers.
No matter where you live, play or work, standing water causes serious dangers.
A heavy rainstorm could turn your front yard into a lake, or clogged drains can leave behind a sink full of smelly water. Standing water causes real problems.
What is standing water and why does standing water cause serious dangers?
Water that doesn’t move or flow is considered standing water, or stagnant water. It’s water that stays in one place until it becomes smelly and dirty. The standing water can come from something as simple as a bucket left under a leaky drain or a poorly-maintained swimming pool.
Standing water comes from either clean water or contaminated water sources. Clean standing water comes from water supply lines that bust or leak and rainwater leaking into your home through roofs, windows, or other unsealed areas. The water may have been clean to start with but can turn stagnant in a short period of time.
Floodwater and sewage backups are examples of standing water coming from contaminated sources and should be considered an immediate problem. These types of water already contain parasites, bacteria, and mold. This poses serious health risks to you, your family, and your pets.
Health Risks of Standing Water
Once standing water has been sitting still for long periods of time, it becomes the perfect breeding ground for all types of bacteria, mold, and parasites. Many types of bacteria thrive in moist environments and can cause serious illness in humans, animals, and the environment. Mold begins to grow in as little as 24 – 48 hours in these conditions. Mold can cause respiratory illnesses in both people and animals with an all-out infestation.
Besides the parasites, bacteria, and mold, standing water also attracts insects and rodents. Mosquitoes love shallow pools of standing water as a breeding ground. It’s even quite common to see the larvae swimming around in the water. Mosquitoes are also known to carry diseases such as malaria, West Nile virus, Zika virus, and some forms of encephalitis which are easily passed onto humans.
If you have standing water inside your home, it can attract rodents such as rats and mice searching for watering holes and nesting space. These rodents can spread disease through their waste or by biting and scratching if you come into contact with them. Nesting can also cause massive amounts of damage to your home.
Inside your home, standing water can pose health risks and also damage the home structure itself. When there are floods, severe storms, or other disasters, broken water pipes can allow water to accumulate in places such as basements or under floors. This accumulated water can cause hidden pools of water that can lead to the growth of bacteria and mold, rot, and structural damage.
